Garry McMichael, Photographer & Painter
Garry McMichael’s “In the Shadow of the Arch” is a visual exploration of something I have looked at almost every day for the past twenty years, and like many of my fellow St, Louisans, have largely taken for granted. In the Shadow of the Arch is a multi-medium exploration starting with photography but also include sketching, painting in several mediums, and digital painting on an iPad and computer. It si a body of work depicting the Arch in such a manner as to encourage viewers to reacquaint themselves with what can only be described as one of the most beautiful sculptures of the 20th century.
For three decades Garry McMichael has been traveling the back roads of middle America, especially the St Louis region and Ozarks, capturing its beauty with the camera, charcoals, pastels and paint. Garry is constantly searching for those fleeting moments when the landscape, the atmospheric conditions and the ever-changing light come together in a flash of visual inspiration.
Garry has been a photojournalist and commercial photographer for the past thirty years. In 2012 Garry designed and published THE ARTISTS & GALLERY DIRECTORY (An eighty-page directory showing the work of the best artists in the St Louis bi-state region). Garry is actively involved with the Greater St. Louis Art Association, Art St Louis and is Past-President of the Gateway Pastel Artists Association.
