A story of collaboration
The story of "Stone Soup" is told in many forms throughout the world. One version of the story tells of 3 soldiers who are trying to get home after a long war and have been on the march for many days. They have run out of food, and as they enter a village, all the village residents lock their doors and windows as they approach. They are hoping that the soldiers will continue on their way without bothering them, for they haven't enough even for themselves. But the soldiers are tired and hungry. They set up camp by the edge of the village, start up a fire, and set a large pot of water on the fire. They don't have any food to place in the pot, but they put a stone in it. The villagers watch this and wonder amongst themselves. "What are you doing?", they ask. "Oh, we are making stone soup!" And as the pot comes to a boil, the three soldiers start loudly discussing how delicious the soup will be. The curious (and hungry) villagers gather round and as they do, one of the soldiers exclaims that while it is certain to be a good soup, an onion always makes it taste better. It so happens that one of the villagers realizes he has an onion and this gets added to the pot. A little time passes and again the soldier cooking the soup tastes it and exclaims that it is almost perfect, but that a carrot would make it more perfect still. "Oh! I have one!", exclaims another villager. So this gets added to the soup. On it goes and more is added until a wonderful soup simmers in the pot. The soldiers and the villagers all enjoy the meal, and there is enough, because everyone shared what they had.
